Chinese National Holiday and Moon Festival

This is a holiday week in the PRC. It is a combination of National Day and Moon Festival. National Day was a huge celebration this year as it is the 60th anniversary of the "new China." There was an unbelievable parade in Beijing....with thousands and thousands of participants. We watched a fabulous fireworks show from our window a couple of days ago. The Chinese people know their fireworks!

October 3rd was Moon Festival. It is a moving holiday as it follows the lunar calendar. It is a celebration on the day in the year that the moon is the brightest. It falls on the 15th day of the 8th month in the lunar calendar. There are several different moon festival legends...the one I like best....the lady living on the moon has everlasting beauty and immortally. Her beauty is most apparent on the day of the festival. She was banished to the moon because she took a pill that was given to her husband by the Emperor. He was given the immortality pill
because he was a great archer and shot down nine extra moons that appeared in the sky.

It is customary during the Moon Festival to give moon cakes. The cakes are beautiful...but taste awful...in my humble opinion. However...Haagen-Daz has gotten into the spirit and created ice cream moon cakes.....now...that is my kind of moon cakes!
